Light:
Partial sun, an eastern or western exposure.
Temperature:
Maintain indoor temperatures above 60°F.
Humidity:
Preferably 50% or higher; however, they will
tolerate low levels of humidity for a short time.
Watering:
Bring soil to dryness between waterings. When
watering, thoroughly saturate the soil until some water trickles from
the bottom of the pot. Growing in a clay pot will help maintain a
healthy root system. As they are semi-epiphytic they need an open and
porous potting mix and some dryness between waterings.
Fertilizer:
They are moderate
feeders that benefit from regular applications of fertilizer once a
week during active growth: ¼ tsp/gallon of water of a balanced
fertilizer. Discontinue
feed in the winter.
Pruning:
They take well to pruning, which does
help maintain size and fullness. The best time to prune is right after
flowering is complete.
Insects and
Disease:
Susceptible to mealy
bugs and root rot if kept too moist and cool.
Comments:
Medinilla myriantha is one of the easiest
medinillas to grow as it tolerates dry conditions in both atmosphere and
soil moisture. A strong grower when given adequate light and proper
watering. They will flower throughout most of the year under good
growing conditions. When they get too large prune them back.
